Class Assignments

As you saw in today’s workshop, there are many online activities ready to use with your students related to Natural Disasters.

Your assignment today is to share with us lessons that you have taught, or will teach, using the materials presented here. What are the advantages of using these online simulations? What does it allow you to do that you couldn’t do before? Is there a better way of teaching this topic without the technology?

Share your lesson and the answer to these questions in our discussion list at yahoo (use the virtual classroom link).

Remember, whenever teaching with technology, you have to think about using what is available to the maximum of its potential. Use the right tool for the right task. If there’s a better way to do something, choose that way.

Virtual Classroom

The Virtual Classroom is where we will build a shared collaboration space for  interactions in between workshops.

There are several free collaboration tools available on the web. We will be working with Yahoo! Groups, as it is a free online tool that only requires that you have internet access and an email program.

If you have never used this type of tool before, you should start by reading the basic information in the Help Section: http://help.yahoo.com/help/groups/ .

Here we will have several interesting features to use. You can:

Post messages to all members of the class (group).

Share Files (upload and download files from different members of the group).

Set up online meetings using the shared group Calendar.

Use Chat (this is for the more technology brave… the tool still needs improvement).

Share Links.

Share Photos.

Create Polls to collect opinions.

Create a common Database.

We will most likely be using basically the Post Messages feature. This can be done from the group website, or from your email. All messages will be posted both online and to your mailbox, for your convenience.

If you’ve never used Yahoo!, you will need to create a user profile (user name, password, and email address). You will only have access to the features for our group after you login. This is for security and privacy.
