Welcome/Introduction to “Natural Disasters”
PowerPoint Presentation and HTML version

This presentation introduces today’s topic and gives examples of what can be done in the classroom. There is information on the Standards and useful URLs (web addresses) that can be used as resources for your lessons.

How predictable are natural disasters? How can seismologists use what they learn about the crust and upper mantle to understand more about earthquakes? What about other natural hazards, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and flash floods? What do we need to know to help our students prepare for potential disasters?

Investigating Websites Using Filamentality

For today’s applications of educational technology, we will demonstrate how to use the tool we showed in Workshop 2 of this series, Filamentality. The sites chosen are all ready examples that can be incorporated in your classroom. They vary from Flash simulations to 3D labs where you can investigate Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and other fun activities.

Filamentality is a fill-in-the-blank interactive Web site that guides you through picking a topic, searching the Web, gathering good Internet sites, and turning Web resources into learning activities. It helps combine the “filaments” of the Web with a learner’s “mentality”. Support is built-in through Mentality Tips that guide you along the way to creating a Web-based activity you can share with others even if you don’t know anything about HTML, Web servers, or all that www-dot stuff.

You can also explore again James Signorelli’s Volcano Lesson. Just click on the video link below to watch the demonstration. The lesson plan is also available.
