Overview
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) provide opportunities and guidelines for creating innovative resources to teach and learn important course content components of middle and high school Earth Science courses. Earth2Class provides several formats to enhance subject content understanding and also explore the three dimensions of the NGSS, current State Standards, and cutting-edge research at LDEO through strategies that help you develop effective curriculum materials for your classes.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no on-campus option this summer. But in conjunction with St. Thomas Aquinas College, we are able to offer graduate credits and/or CTLE credit for participation in online-only versions and Zoom sessions of the “Astronomy, “Weather and Climate,” and/or “Minerals Rocks and Resources” courses described below.
These are available for 2 or 3 credits at a special tuition rate of $445 per credit PLUS a $300 fee to Columbia University (prorated if you take 2 or more courses).
SUMMER 2020 REGISTRATION FORMS:
St. Thomas Aquinas College (registration)
Directions for online Payment
LDEO course fee (w/ or w/o credit)
“Astronomy”
(GED 7214)
Our Planet Earth is but one component of the Solar System, which is but one component of the Milky Way Galaxy and the Universe. Understanding interactions between Earth, Sun, Moon, and other celestial objects provide greater awareness of such important concepts as energy flow, matter, Deep Time, and our personal place in the Universe. This institute offers opportunities to begin development of examples of new, NGSS-based approaches to teaching these topics in middle and high school courses. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to host these sessions at the Lamont Campus of Columbia University in Palisades, NY, nor visit the American Museum of Natural History. This institute is a component of the Earth2Class Workshops for Teachers.
“Weather and Climate”
(GED 7212)
No aspect of the Earth System affects everybody everyday more than does weather, and changes in global climate pose some of the greatest challenges to people and societies in this century. This workshop offers opportunities to enhance your own understanding of what causes weather and climate, and also to expand your awareness of examples of NGSS-based approaches to teaching these topics in middle and high school courses. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to hold workshop sessions are at the Lamont Campus of Columbia University in Palisades, NY, or visit the American Museum of Natural History. This institute is a component of the Earth2Class Workshops for Teachers.
“Minerals, Rocks, and Resources”
(GED 7211)
Minerals, rocks, and resources are key components of any Earth Science course, but adoption of NGSS-based approaches to teaching offers new challenges for curriculum design. This workshop offers opportunities to begin development of examples of new approaches to learn about these Earth materials that incorporate engineering and technology practices, cross-cutting patterns, and the Nature of Science. Dur to COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to hold this course at the Lamont Campus of Columbia University in Palisades, NY, nor take field trips to the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg, NJ, and the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. This institute is a component of the Earth2Class Workshops for Teachers.

About Dr. Michael J Passow
Dr. Michael J Passow recently retired after a 44-year career as a classroom teacher at the Middle School, High School, and College levels in New York and New Jersey, and continues to provide inspiration for teachers through many venues. Dr. Passow has demonstrated leadership in the field through service as President of Earth Science education organizations at the state (Science Teacher Association of New York State), regional (National Association of Geoscience Teachers-Eastern Section), and national (National Earth Science Teachers Association) levels.
He is the founder and organizer of the Earth2Class Workshops for Teachers, a unique program that has connected research scientists, teachers and students through weekend programs at Lamont for more than 20 years. In his position as Adjunct Associate Research Scientist at LDEO, Dr. Passow has cooperated with dozens of Lamont researchers to provide Broader Outreach of their investigation results. More recently, he is developing Workshops with Professors in Brazil, turning E2C into an international resource.
